Historic Downtown Charleston is on the main Peninsula surrounded by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The legend here is that the Ashley and Cooper Rivers join to form the Atlantic Ocean. It is actually a series of small neighborhoods and boroughs- each with a different flavor. The area South of Broad is the most famous with the largest group of Pre-Revolutionary homes in America. Enjoy the Battery, White Point Gardens, and the spectacular antebellum mansions. The French Quarter is filled with theatres, restaurants, art galleries, hotels, and notable homes. Toward the west and the Ashley River are Harleston Village and Cannonborough. To the east and toward the Cooper River are Ansonborough, Wraggborough, and Mazyckborough. Walk through the areas and see the historic colors, vibrant window boxes, and horse drawn carriages.
